The History of TISOA,
Did you realize that TISOA pre-dated the formation of NISOA? Ray Bernabei, current NISOA Executive Director, formed a soccer team in 1946 at the Indiana State Teachers College (now Indiana University of Pennsylvania). He began officiating in 1947 in a game versus Slippery Rock at Kiski Prep in Saltsburg, PA, then coached by John Eiler. He later officiated at Allegheny College, the University of Pittsburgh, Grove City College and Oberlin College.
In 1952, Ray was asked to assign officials for schools in the Tri-State area and he then established the Tri-State Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Organization. The first 5 members, in addition to Ray, were Bill Tkach, Bud Roman, Andrew "Red" Midway and Pat Marcin.
In 1963 Ray moved to Ohio and gave the reins of the organization to Bill Tkach. TISOA joined NISOA in 1964. We have a proud tradition of officiating excellence in Western Pennsylvania and you should keep this in mind every time that you step on the field.
The purpose of the ASSOCIATION shall be to:
- Represent the National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association (NISOA).
- Provide an adequate number of well-trained officials to client schools.
- Promote the welfare of the game of soccer.
- Cooperate with organizations officially connected with the game of soccer.
- Encourage sportsmanship and fair play.
